Meet several of the wonderful volunteers and our our new Gilgal Living editor, Courtney Cater.

Reminding us that we can….
Just recently, a resident and I were at the Home Depot picking up a few items, light bulbs, mop heads, and a couple of kitchen faucets. A very kind Home Depot employee named “Ace” assisted us with our selection of the faucets. Afterwards, he commented “you do know that you can install these faucets?” I had never even considered that I might be capable. He opened the package and began to explain to us how to do it and reminded us again that we could. When we returned to Gilgal, Yesenia and Sara, got under the kitchen sink, followed his instructions and installed our new faucet. (They didn’t want me to get dirty, so, I was invited to watch them.) There were cheers and applause when water flowed from our new faucet. Woo hoo! Thanks to “Ace” from the Cascade Home Depot for saving us a bill from the plumber and for the priceless feeling that comes with a job well done! Maybe you have skills that you would like to share with Gilgal. Call me at 404-305-8007. Val Cater, Executive Director
GILGAL AWARDED “CHALLENGE GRANT”
An anonymous donor has awarded a “challenge grant” to Gilgal, Inc., a Christ-centered recovery program for homeless, addicted women throughout metro Atlanta. The donor agreed to match any contributions made to Gilgal, dollar for dollar, up to $7500, from now until September 29th, 2011.
“Helping Gilgal by making a donation during this challenge will doubly bless our women” says Val Cater, Founder and Executive Director of Gilgal. “We hope the community helps us respond to this challenge grant because homelessness and addiction are serious problems in metro Atlanta. The women we serve have few options and need community support. So far we have raised $3800 toward our $7500 goal.”
Contributions of money, donated items and food, acts of service and prayers are welcomed and appreciated.

2011 Mid Year Report
July 4th Cookout at Gilgal
Submitted by: Board Member, Ms. Charlie M. H. Wilson
While the Country celebrated its’ freedom with fireworks, food, family and friends so did the women of Gilgal.
Gilgal may not have had the crowd of Peachtree Street or Macys for the festivities, but there was no shortage of food or friends and family. We were not without fireworks either; all you had to do was look at the ladies to see their hearts swell with fireworks of joy and love that exploded in every direction. One of our Board Members, “Chef” Charles and his assistant Ryan (his son) sweated from the soaring heat of the day grilling sausages, hotdogs and burgers.
The ladies showed off their culinary skills with potato salad, green salad, baked beans and coleslaw. Oh, let us not forget the scrumptious pies like potato, pumpkin and of course the million dollar pie. Um, Um Good! Excitement was in the air, as Board Members played a very competitive game of cards with residents. There was the junk talking, bragging, and shrills of delight when someone barely made their books. A couple of times the game was so intense that Board Member, Kyara stood to slam her cards down with more of that “Slam” sound. You card players know how we do it.
Then there was the word game going on with a couple of the ladies and Ryan, one would say a word and the other had to say a word to coincide with it. Then there was the conversation over who fed the cat and what she was fed. The laughter filled my soul and the camaraderie was awesome. We must do it again!
Yes, I tell you 4th of July at Gilgal was the place to be. We wish to thank Charles for not only cooking but also providing the food and to the ladies “THANK YOU” for your delicious delights.
So the next time you want to celebrate (any occasion and if you at a loss for one, please feel free to create one), offer to volunteer or if you are interested in financially supporting Gilgal we invite you to come on out for a visit. The ladies will be delighted to receive you and provide a tour of their residence. Arrangements be made by contacting Ms. Val Cater at 404-305-8007.
Yes, the 4th of July was a blast and huge success! See photos below...

Reflections: Coffee and Dessert with the Women of Gilgal
Reflections, our first official fundraiser, was a wonderful success! Spoken word, poetry, other arts. Our residents were overwhelmed with the love and support they received as they stood on stage and risked baring themselves by speaking openly about their journey. Our invited guest, Kay Flowers (EMCEE), Didymus Swann (Rose in a Cesspool), Sheila Jackson (The Forest), Hillary Roy (Journey's of Love Voices of the Heart), Traneisa Caldwell (They Said You Wouldn’t Make It), Kyara Smith (His Eye is on the Sparrow), Theresa Howard (Original Dance) and Rev. Tricia McClendon (Phenomenal Woman) were excellent and tremendous encouragements to our residents. Azizi Blissett shared her creative collages entitled The Redefinition of Me. The silent auction was fun and the desserts were plenteous and delicious. We could not have done it without the support of our sponsors, Chi Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Gourmet Services, Inc. (Ray McClendon). Thanks also to the many friends of Gilgal that provided items for the silent auction.

Impact Fulton Industrial
The residents of Gilgal joined forces with several other Christian organizations at Impact Fulton Industrial on May 3. I Impact Fulton/Maximum Impact is much more than a worship service. As its name implies it is a community impact event. Food, clothing and hygiene supplies are given to the impoverished and representatives from a multitude of social service organizations are present to offer assistance in getting one's life back on track.
Impact Fulton/Maximum Impact serves as one of the many examples of proof that God, through his disciples in Christ, can help you overcome daily life-issues. The residents and staff of Gilgal were blessed to be a part of this event. Learn more about it here
